New version of platform JavaFX for Internet-applications was launched in September after more than a year-lasting development. This technology has a long lifecycle story: it was initially created under the name “F3” in 2007, and had several releases and owners since then. New release of JavaFX is an Oracle’s significant response to such technologies as Adobe AIR and Microsoft Silverlight. Java FX 2.0 gives opportunities for fast and effective 2D- and 3D-graphics with hardware acceleration, vector animation built on the principles of keyframe and tweening, egronomic widgets set, driving both in browsers and Java Web Start, installation as a desktop application, usage of modern powerful programming languages.

The key feature of release 2.0 is the availability of all the JavaFX functionality as regular Java API. Previously FXScript was the only language for JavaFX. Now JavaFX platform is opened for the whole spectrum of JVM-languages: Java, Scala, Croovy, JRuby, Jython, Clojure, Mirah, Fantom, and Visage. JavaFX developers suppose this list of languages will be enough for a wide range of programming followers. Version 2.0 of JavaFX obtains other additional useful features:

  • FXML – new flexible XML-based format for interfaces declarative description and vector graphics supporting scenarios installation;
  • Prism – new graphical subsystem for modern GPU allowing to accelerate graphics effectiveness;
  • New Gstreamer-based media-subsystem supporting VP6, MP3;
  • Over 50 components for user interface creation including various form elements, layout-managers, graphics, and diagrams; supporting CSS3 for styles;
  • Installed web-component based on WebKit and supporting HTML and JavaScript;
  • Reworded Java plugin supporting Prism and preloading;
  • New architecture;
  • Optimized animation subsystem.

At the moment stable release is available for Windows, Developer Preview Mac OS, stable release for Linux is expected in 2012.
